As a way to break the ice, I asked my students today to describe their relationship with science. Here are some of their responses:
- Casual interest
- Bad experiences in the past
- Usually try to avoid it, but I’m willing to give it a shot!
- Interested but not skilled
One of my goals for this course (that I don’t announce) is to improve the relationship students have with science. Some of the healing comes with trust (I’m not trying to trick them or make them feel stupid) and some comes with practice (they are just as qualified to make observations as anyone else, they belong in this class!).
