Dangers of fieldwork

Southern Alps glaciers, NZ

The glaciology community lost a great scientists this week and even those of us who were not close to Gordon are reevaluating the risks associated with fieldwork.  There are places and situations from which not even the most prepared person could escape, accidents can happen.

For all of the avoidable hazards, making an informed decision about where and how to travel or sample is a valuable conversation.  As a student: ask your mentor or mountaineering guide to review and discuss the risks in your field site.  As a mentor: make sure your students are aware of potential hazards and what to do in case of an emergency.
