I handed out 3 laser pointers to 3 of my students in class, I said, “Trace the moraine with your laser”.  Nothing happened.  Blank stares.  Nervous tension in the air.  They did not prep for class.  So I said, “Perhaps I should tell you what a moraine is!  Moraines are ridges made of boulders and rocks deposited by glaciers where ice melts to water and the water can not support the heavy material.  Moraines tell us where the glacier front used to be in the past!”  I prompted them to try pointing out the moraines now, and all three lasers were tracing the distinct ridge crests, it was a great moment.
