Ice is AMAZING!!  These ice crystals (called needle ice) are about 5cm tall and hoisting soil and pebbles up into the morning sun.  H2O expands when it changes from water to ice and it’s easier for the ice to grow out of the ground than to push soil horizontally or downward.  As the sun warms the ice, these proud towers will collapse.  This process could cause sediment to slowly move downhill or develop pockets of air.
